Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Money Neko ("we", "us", "our") is operated by Money Neko Limited (NZBN 9429051333461, Company Number 8747306), a company registered in New Zealand trading as "Money Neko", currently operating in private beta. Money Neko is not a registered bank, is not currently registered on the Financial Service Providers Register, and does not hold a financial advice provider licence. Money Neko does not take custody of your money — it instructs allocations across accounts you already hold with your own bank or payment provider, under permissions you grant and can revoke at any time.

2. Our starting position on your data

We built Money Neko because we were frustrated watching financial companies treat customer data as a revenue line. So, as a rule:

  • We do not sell, rent, or license your personal information to anyone, for any reason.
  • We do not use your transaction data to target you with advertising.
  • Individual transaction amounts are de-identified by default across our systems — including from Money Neko staff. Internally, accounts are referenced by random identifiers, not names, and amounts render as masked values (e.g. "•••.••") rather than figures.

3. The emergency-access exception

In rare situations — for example, investigating a suspected fraud, a failed transfer, or a legal obligation — a staff member may need to view specific transaction values on an account. When this happens:

  • We ask for your specific, informed consent before that access happens, every time. We do not have standing or blanket access to unmasked data.
  • The staff member reviewing the values still cannot see information that identifies you personally alongside those values.
  • Access is logged, time-limited, and scoped to the issue being resolved.

4. Information we collect

Waitlist and beta sign-up: name, email address, and any information you choose to add when you register interest.

Beta account data: account credentials, device and log data, and — where you connect an income or bank source through a third-party provider (for example, an open-banking or payments API) — the transaction and balance data needed to run your automated allocation rules. This is the data that is de-identified per Section 2 and 3.

Anonymous benchmarking data: aggregated, de-identified statistics (e.g. category-level spending as a percentage of income) that cannot on their own be traced back to you, used to power comparisons like "you spend 20% more on dining out than others in your bracket."

Website usage data: basic analytics about how the site is used (pages viewed, general location by region, device type).

5. How we use your information

  • To run the automated income-allocation feature you set up.
  • To manage the waitlist and beta intake, including limiting each beta intake to a small number of testers.
  • To generate anonymous, aggregated benchmarking comparisons.
  • To maintain security, investigate suspected misuse, and meet legal obligations.
  • To communicate with you about the product, beta access, and (only if you opt in) product updates.

6. Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information. We share limited information with:

  • Infrastructure and processing providers who host our systems or process payments/income connections on our behalf, bound by confidentiality obligations, and only to the extent needed to operate the service.
  • Authorities, where required by New Zealand law.
  • A successor entity, in the event of a merger or acquisition, subject to the same privacy commitments described here.

Some of our service providers may store or process data outside New Zealand. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable privacy safeguards apply, consistent with information privacy principle 12 of the Privacy Act 2020.

7. Data retention and security

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above, or as required by law, and delete or de-identify it afterwards. We use technical and organisational measures (encryption, access controls, and the masking practices described in Sections 2–3) appropriate to the sensitivity of financial data.

8. Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, request a copy of it, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong. To do this, contact us using the details in Section 11. If you believe we have mishandled your personal information and we haven't resolved your concern, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

9. Cookies

Our website may use essential cookies and privacy-respecting analytics to understand aggregate usage. We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles.

10. Children

Money Neko is not directed at, and is not intended for use by, children. Beta access is limited to adults aged 18 and over.

11. Changes to this policy, and contact

We may update this policy as Money Neko moves from stealth beta toward general availability. We'll post the updated date above and, for material changes, tell beta users directly. Questions or requests about your personal information can be sent to evamayalloyd@moneyneko.app.
